Frequently Asked Questions
Please let us know what other questions you have about Montana's Registered Agent industry! We are here to help, and would be happy to meet and discuss things further. Much of the revenue generated for the State of Montana is derived from vehicle registration services.
Industry Q&A
No. Auto insurance rates are not based simply on how many vehicles are registered through Montana LLCs. Insurance rates are primarily based on claim costs, vehicle use, garaging location, miles driven, repair costs, weather, accident rates, theft, underwriting rules, and state insurance laws.
In fact, NAIC data shows Montana’s average auto insurance expenditure in 2023 was below both the national average and states such as Texas and Florida. The more accurate explanation is that Montana’s smaller population and smaller insurance pool can make claim costs harder to spread, especially when weather, wildlife, repair costs, and rural driving conditions affect losses.
The issue is not Montana registered agents. The issue is whether the vehicle is insured correctly based on its actual use, garaging location, and underwriting requirements.

Without a sales tax, the State of Montana relies on creative solutions (like commercial registered agents) to generate revenue that supports our infrastructure needs statewide. Having the Registered Agent industry helps the affordability crisis by preventing the need for a sales tax.Commercial Registered Agents contribute millions to state revenue with business & vehicle fees from out-of-state individuals and the Montana LLCs they set up.
Registered agent companies like LLCTLC recommend clients choose from over 200 sponsored license plates that directly fund 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations across the state. Through the state's sponsored plate program, extra fees from plate purchases and renewals go straight to the sponsoring organizations, to the tune of tens of thousands a month.
In Fiscal Year 2025, the Montana DOJ’s sponsored plate program generated $8,323,163.82 in revenue for charitable and collegiate organizations statewide.

Once an out-of-state client purchases a package, we then file their LLC with the Secretary of State using our Registered Agent address. From there, the client purchases their vehicle and lists their Montana LLC as the owner, mails their title work to our Helena office, where we process and mail their plates and registration. The fees that are paid when the vehicle is registered go to Montana's roads.LLCTLC is happy to answer any questions you have about this process and how it benefits the state of Montana! We’d love to take you out for coffee.
